The grape varieties

An exceptional terroir

The white grape varieties account for 6 hectares of production, and include the following:

  • Sauvignon Blanc (75%),
  • Sémillon (22%),
  • Muscadelle (3%).

The red grape varieties account for 36 hectares of production, and include the following:

  • Merlot (64%),
  • Cabernet Sauvignon (17%),
  • Cabernet Franc (14%),
  • Malbec (3,5%),
  • Petit Verdot (1,5%).

The Malromé vineyards have been producing wine for five centuries. They occupy an exceptional terroir consisting of clay and gravel alluvium brought about by the formation of the Pyrenean valley through which the Garonne river flows.

The estate has eight different grape varieties spread over 42 hectares of land.

Red grapes varieties

This late variety likes warm terroirs and is perfectly expressed on gravel, stony soils, as in the AOCs of the left bank of the Gironde and the Garonne (pessac-Léognan, graves, Médoc appellations) where it often dominates in assemblies.

Cabernet Franc gives red wines liveliness and great aromatic finesse. It is cultivated in Libournais, on the right bank of the Dordogne, in particular in Saint-Émilion.

Graceful and distinctive, the Malbec brings flavors of red fruits, notably plum and cherry, and hints of violet. It also brings opulence and density with very elegant and fine tannins.

Petit Verdot is a late-ripening grape variety, it brings to the wine an intense color, a tannic richness, and an aromatic power characterized by the violet.

Merlot brings suppleness and aromas to Bordeaux red wines. It is very present in Libournais, as in Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, where it likes cold soils with a clayey tendency. Its precocious maturation and its ability to produce wines that are ready more quickly than those born from Cabernet-Sauvignon have made it the majority grape variety throughout the Bordeaux vineyards.

Cabernet Sauvignon gives Bordeaux red wines structure and cellarability. It brings freshness as well as spicy notes of green and black pepper, as well as notes of cassis and red.

White grapes varieties

Muscadelle has a good yield, a remarkable richness in floral aromas accompanied by slightly musky notes of orange zest. It also brings a certain roundness to livelier wines made from sauvignon and is rarely vinified alone.

Sauvignon Blanc has gained popularity for its lively and aromatic side. Its characteristic aromas are rather vegetal: boxwood and blackcurrant bud.

Semillon, the centerpiece of white Bordeaux wines, produces fatty wines that are discreetly aromatic. It expresses itself particularly when it is well matured. It easily takes noble rot and is a major component of sweet wines from both banks of the Garonne (Sauternes, Barsac, Sainte-Croix-du-Mont, Loupiac, etc).
